Preliminary Music Video (Planning)

As part of our preliminary task we have split into groups and had to choose and recreate the first minute of a music video. This means choosing a video and preparing a list of props and locations and a story board so that we could recreate our chosen music video as authentically as possible.

The music video that we have chosen is 'Summer in the City - Mikill Pane'.

Mikill Pane - Summer in the city Video Analysis
In this video it starts with the artist camping alone in a field and then goes to his various activities throughout the city. The video is almost all outdoors as the song is about the weather particularly summer activity.

Analysis of 'Justin Bieber - Baby'

The video is about Justin Bieber going to a bowling ally with a group of friends. He meets a girl who appears to be his girlfriend and the video is the relationship between them where it starts off him being rejected by the girl but by the end of the video he gets together with her and they walk off happily.

The music would defiantly be considered in the pop genre. It is similar to music you would hear from pop boy bands such as One Direction and other young male solo artists such as Chris Brown.

The target audience is children/teenagers aged around 13-16 specifically the female population of this age group. Most his fans are girls who are in love with Justin Bieber.

A generic convention that is used in video is having a story as part of the video but then cutting to the artist performing, in this case dancing and singing.

Another convention that is used in a lot of videos not just in pop music is dancing, there are parts of the video where we can see dancing such as him in the cut scenes and the dance battle. This is a generic convention for a majority music videos however it does appeal to genre and target audience in the way they are dancing. Such as break dancing is a dance style you would expect more and would appeal more to a younger generation.

Artist Image

The image that the artist is trying to portray is trying to be a young popular ladies man. Throughout the video he is surrounded by other people to give an image of popularity

Digipak Analysis of 'Eminem - Recovery'

Analysis of album covers

Slick Rick - A.K.A Ricky D

In Slick Ricks album cover it is clear that the focus is on him, his face takes up the majority of the cover and any space that has is not showing him is blackened out. This has two affects, one that it draws the focus to him and two that the darkness shows that he is a dark characters, this relates to a lot of hip-hop artist they often try to show themselves as powerful, feared people. Again relating to power is the connotations of wealth, he has a diamond nose ear-piercing and a large diamond in his mouth showing he is wealthy enough to use such expensive objects in this manor. The other key thing that sticks out is his eye patch, this is his symbol. He is never seen without his eye patch and therefore it makes him stand out and easily recognised.

Rihanna - Hard Feat. Jeezy

In Rihannas album cover like most she is the clear focus, the cover shows nearly her entire body. The thing that strikes you most about this cover is that she is wearing very little. You can see a lot her body and she is also striking a very sexual pose. This means that a key focus of this album is on desire, they are trying to make Rihanna look attractive and appealing to the audience. It is however different in the way that she is not looking at the camera, when trying to attract the audience they will often have the artist staring straight at them but in this case she's not, this could be to give her a more mysterious image. The other key focus of this cover is to give her a dark image. Female artist often try to make themselves look feminine and innocent but Rihanna has done the opposite. The colours used are very striking, black and red. They are often seen as very evil colours and ones you would relate with a dark and scary characters. The text also supports this in the way it is made to look like blood splatter. The cover is very controversial in the way that they use a lot of sex appeal but make her look intimidating at the same time.

Drake - Take Care

In Drakes album cover for 'Take care' although he is featured quite prominently the background and props in the cover are very significant. For example the gold, he is wearing lots of expensive looking gold jewellery and there are three large gold objects on the table. All of these things as well as the expensive looking painting are connotations of wealth. They however portray him in a different manor to how other artists would use these sorts of objects. Most artist would use these objects to show power however he his using them very differently. He does to look proud of the wealth he is looking down as opposed to at the camera showing that he does not want all the attention and it could also be away of perhaps saying that money cant buy happiness. The objects on the table look like religious objects so it could be away of him showing his religious side. I think the most significant part about this album cover is his positioning it tell us a lot about his image, rather than him trying to show himself as a threatening artist he is trying to show that he is emotional and caring, this could also relate to the album title 'Take Care'.

Digipaks!

What is a 'Digipak'

In our first lesson back we learnt about Digipaks, what a digipak is and how they are used to represent an artists image and therefore apply to there audience.

A digipak is simply the casing of their album the back and front cover and the insides, they're often decorated with pictures of the artist among other images and objects that are appropriate to their image. It is also common for them not to feature the artist but they will still feature images that represent the artist image or what the album represents. Another aim of the digipak is to attract buyers, like most products they want it to stand out among others so they will try and make them bold and eye catchy. This however may be unnecessary for artists with an already established reputation but more common with smaller artist.
